Hit Counter

It's a way to "Connect" and "Protect" the privacy of users:  Richardsville Road Address Book with visitor comments and E-mail forwarding.

How it works, Example:  DannyLong@RichardsvilleRoad.co .  All mine does when someone e-mails me with that address, is send the e-mail to the website, there it is forwarded to my normal Earthlink e-mail account.  Once I set it up, you do not have to do anything else, it is all automatic, just check your same old e-mail like you always have!  then the only way someone can get your private e-mail address is if you e-mail them.  This is the best protection I can offer on a public address book.

WOW, I AM WAY BEHIND ON SETTING UP ADDRESSES! SORRY

I Thank you all for the input, help and kind words, Danny Long.... P.S. If anyone would like to include your e-mail address here with your post, just let me know.  I am sure others would appreciate being able to say hello to old friends and school chums.

IF E-MAIL BELOW IS NOT HIGHLIGHTED LIKE THIS IT IS NOT SET UP YET,  I AM WAITING FOR OWNERS INFO TO SET IT UP!  THEY ARE ALL COPY AND PASTE ADDRESSES!

Hello:  I am the web site doofus who is trying to learn this as I go.  I thank you all for being patient with me one mistake at a time.   I was born and raised in Richardsville, now living in North Carolina

Hey Dan--Great Job!!!

Don't know if anyone mentioned it--but my Grandmother used to talk about a school house near the confluence of Work Run and Clear Run (near the Iron Bridge) I know where the foundation is (or was) but don't know much about the school. Keep up the good work--this area has a lot of history and its too bad someone didn't get the old-timers like my Grandpa to write some of it down--I can remember stories he told-but not many details . I'll keep looking and maybe I can even find some old pictures to send and post

( Wow great to hear from you Ken, I hope all is well with your family, I would love to share Boyer Pictures and recollections with the others here, keep me posted with what you find. Danny)

Dan

Deb and I are checking to see if the churches in Richardsville will let us put your web site in their church bulletin's so that maybe you will get some different story's

(Well I am honored you think the site is ready for "public" use, I would love to hear from others there, and add what ever they would like to submit to the project. Danny)  I have since been told the churches have agreed to include us in there bulletins, I am thankful to you and the churches for their participation.

Hi Dan and Shelly,

I really enjoy this web site of yours. It sure brings back a lot of memories.
You are doing a really good job. I will check into it quite often to see what's new.
I write the Richardsville Community News for the Jeffersonian Democrat paper out of Brookville.
I will mention your web site in that column. I imagine you will get quite a response from it.
A lot of people tell me they read that column. I put it in once a month through the months the
Richardsville Social Center is open. Since I attend the meetings, I usually write about what is
going on from that stand point. Then I throw in some of the other local news.

One of the things I wanted to correct on your site is the names of my grandmother's horses that
pulled the "school bus" Instead of "pete", the horse was "Pet". And in the genealogy part my one
uncle Chauncey McKillip was nicknamed "Chick" instead of "Chuck".
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing all that you do.

 Thank you.

(Sorry about that, but thank you for telling me about the mistakes you found, I hope they show to be corrected now, and add a page for Pats local news, I hope to hear more soon, Danny)

Hi Dan

Long time mo see. I think your site is great. Linda Mckillip sent it
to me. I am sending it to all the Mackeys. I know there is an article from the paper
about Elsie & Harry's wedding in a plane over Richardsville, I will try and find
it and forward it to you. keep up the good work.

Hi Dan,

I just discovered your website after my mom gave me the address. Very cool! I'm
glad you are memorializing Richardsville, which was in my opinion, the very best
place to grow up on the planet!

Do you want recollections from younger folks? If so, I'll try to add some interesting
stories from my youth.

Keep up the great work!

Kelly (Thompson) Allred    kelly_thompson_allred@RichardsvilleRoad.com

(not sure of location, Kelly did not say)

(What a surprise! welcome aboard, looking forward to your recollections as well as pictures!) I have since visited with Kelly, and she tells me she is working on stories about the swimming hole!  I can't wait

Boy does this bring back good memories.

I guess you could call me a part-timer to
the Richardsville experience. My grandparents were Doretha & Tim VanNorman who
owned the old Richardsville Hotel, my family and I spent many summer weekends there
not to mention cold winter one also.  See the hotel only had cold water plumbing!
Now this wasn't too bad in summer but those trips to the outhouse in snow was
none to fun.  As a kid washing up in a basin was cool, no bathtub yea!! Of course
if I got too dirty to mum's liking she sent me up to the trailer for a real bath - bummer.
Hey Kelly good story on the swinnin hole. That hill seems alot longer now!
I'll keep checking in for new updates.

SueAnn (VanNorman) Wencil

Russell,PA

( Well welcome SueAnn! and thank you for submitting feedback.  I opened a Recollections page for you in hopes you may offer a few more words.  I also remember the outhouse from when I was growing up, and the single cold spigot in the house.  Thank you again for dropping a line, and I hope to hear more.  I would also like to include Genealogy, as my Grandmother was Carrie VanNorman from Richardsville.

PS  You also reminded me about recollections I have not included in mine, so I need to get back to work on that! :-)

Danny Long

Pinchgut / Richardsville

Danny Long.

I remember the Presbyterian church.  It sat beside that little graveyard across from the school.  I never knew of church services being held there as there was only one family that were Presbyterians, the Rhodes family.  Two bachelor brothers and there two unmarried sisters.

I went to school  in the old school house.  It was below the one there now.

I remember the dam on north fork just above the old bridge.  It furnished power for the Horner grist mill that was below the Horner house where a Thompson lives now.  If you send your address I will draw a picture( the best I can) of  the old grist mill and send to you.

If you contact Fat Shaffer he might be able to add some things as he is 9 months younger than me.  I remember when (a un-named student) set the paper on fire in his desk.  Then teachers was allowed to use a paddle and she really applied it to his rear and he stood there with a big smile on his face.

I also remember 3 stores and a blacksmith shop in Pinchgut.  (Richardsville) If I can be anymore help, let me know. The old gristmill has been gone over 80 years.  On April 3rd I will be 93 so my memory is a bit hazy.

Danny,

I think you may have contacted me a few years ago, but I am a direct
descendant of Ludwig Long from Brooksville. Are you descended from his line
also? I was raised in Oil City, PA but have been living in Florida for the
past 25 years.

A couple of years ago I took a DNA test in order to see if I was related to
a Long branch in Ohio that also claimed that they were descended from
Ludwig. It was a perfect match. Ludwig left Brooksville for Ohio and the
Long branch there are descended from his children who went with him.

Emma Work in Brooksville has a wealth of Long family information. She is
descended from the female line.

Very nice website. I'll keep visiting often.

PS. I forgot to let you know in my previous e-mail that I wrote three pieces that are
located in the Jefferson County Historical Society Library on Daniel Long, Sr.,
Daniel Long, Jr., and Irvin Robinson Long that I would be glad to forward to you if
you wanted to post them on your website. Daniel Long, Sr. was the first person murdered
in Jefferson County, and I wrote an account of the events leading up to his murder,
the actual murder and the trial conducted in Brookville from reading the transcript of the trial;
Daniel Long, Jr., his son, was a famous gunsmith and violin maker who lived in Brookville,
and I wrote an account of his life as well as Irvin Robinson Long, who was my g-g-g grandfather
who died at Camp Jamison during the Civil War.

Let me know and I'd be glad to forward those pieces to you.

Hey Dan,

I was told about your site at work by KT> known to you as Kevin Thompson, We were discussing our long gone youth and the things that have changed out Richardsville way. The last time I saw you you didn't know me as time marches on and we all change. Anyway I think I have somewhere our class pictures at the Warsaw school, I will dig them up and forward them to you, I have the Firearms License that Butch Moyer had for the store, I have it framed as part of my youth.  I still remember riding my bike or walking to your house, how kind your mom was to me, you, Rodger & Jim coming to mine and going on to the Kerchinski's, The Fiat that you made into a buggy, and how you Long boys had the First Mini Bikes and Fox & Hounds on the North Fork side hill. Anyway I will see what I can find and get them out to you .

Best regards ,Ed Metts    ed_metts@RichardsvilleRoad.com

(not sure of location, visitor did not say, Brookville I think)

( Bicycles and Dune Buggies were sure a big part of Richardsville when we were growing up, you are the first to mention that, looking forward to more fond memories and those precious pictures.  Thanks Ed)

Hey, Dan and shell...

"Thank you", Danny Long... for having the most wonderful idea!
I think all small towns should really think about this. Sometimes... in many cases it could be the only way for some to keep in touch and to keep memories alive!  I'm so excited! What a wonderful idea! I've been reading your web for 3 days, just trying to figure out what to say!  So have my kids, (which were some of the next generation to grow up in R.V.).  I do my best to read Pat Davis's, (You'll always be Aunt Patty) column in the newspaper every month when I pay enough attention, and try to keep up with everything, just to see what's going' on around the old neighborhood and at the Social (Auction) center. Worked there plenty of Saturday nights' in the kitchen with a lot of good people, including your Mom, (and still wish I had the sloppy-joe recipe). It's always a pleasure to see they are always havin' fun and keepin' everything lively and exciting in our home town.

P.S. Happy Birthday Shell!!  I think of you every leap year! And more of course!!
There are a few of us that have special B-Day's, your's leap-year, Kim's Christmas , Terry's Columbus Day, and mine Valentines Day. Those are all I can remember right at this time. I just turned 50 you know. First it's your mind... So they say. I tend to believe them.

Danny,

Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed www.RichardsvilleRoad.com!  I look forward to reading "recollections and memories" as more are hopefully added.  Our kids,Troy(13) and Carlee(10) thought the stories were neat too, especially the ones about Uncle Jim McKillip.  Any hoot, great work helping keep the history of the area alive.

Keep up the good work.

( Dustin, You sure surprised me!  I guess you know, we are all now looking to see your recollections, LOL.....Yep, Jim was a very big part of my child hood, I would not be the same person without him....PS, Jim that was a complement, NOT my bad parts.... I did those on my own ..LOL) danny

Danny,

I'm David Gayley's daughter, and I have some snapshots I took when he taught at the school.
Thought maybe you would like them for your wonderful website.

I believe I took these during the spring of 1952. I was sick during the 1951-1952 year and couldn't go to school. In the spring when I was starting to recover, Dad would occasionally take me along to school.

I remember the first day he took me with him. It was a warm day and the windows were open. Turk Beatty and Dave McFadden were sitting in seats beside the windows. When Dad released the classes for morning recess, Turk and Dave jumped out the windows. I remember being shocked and thinking, "I wonder what my Daddy is going to do!"

Anyway if you think the pictures appropriate, please feel free to use them.
Hopefully you or your sisters will be able to identify the names I've forgotten.

I have never met you, but your photos are exactly what we are looking for!  I am opening a recollections page for you, if you would like to share other stories, PLEASE feel free to submit them!  If you have any, group/class photos are also on "our" list of things to share. Thank you SOOO much Alice for taking the time to help-out, )  Danny

My name is Dan Vogel, and I was just introduced to your site by my cousin Susan Cable. I'm glad to see that you are compiling this info.

Neither of us are actually from Richardsville, but it is like home to us, too. We are descendents of Wilbur and Irene Shaffer Cable. I live in Pittsburgh, and Susan lives in Buffalo, but we both spent much of our childhood in Richardsville/Brookville.

My family owns the house that is named for William Wasson on the old maps.  It's the gray house that sits at the north end of the village above Jim Metts.  My great-grandmother, Irene Shaffer Cable, bought the house in the 1940s (I think), and then my grandparents, Thomas W and Anna May Cable bought it from her estate when she died in the early '60s. We got it after my grandfather died in 1987.

If you are familiar with our house, you might have noticed that we are slowly trying to fix it up. When I was gutting the front sitting room (that used to be the post office), I found a handwritten doc inside the wall - - I cannot imagine how it got there. See the attached doc. My grandfather said that William Wasson was the original owner of the house, and this Doc implies that he was paying off a debt to Jacob Simpson, who apparently was a large landowner across the road. Anyway, I thought you might be interested in this doc for the site.

Thanks again. Dan Vogel    daniel_t_vogel@RichardsvilleRoad.com

(Dan, I was surly surprised to get your message and information! I have been thinking about a documents section, Some visitors may enjoy more like the treasure your sharing here. Please stay in touch with our little site, thanks again.

Hi Danny and Shelly,
I just found out about this website and I think it is GREAT!! I looked at the class pictures from the Hazen school and I know several of the names that are needed there.  Give me a few days, and I will see if I can find my copies of the pictures and I will get back to you.

since 1979, and when Don & Dawnie told me about this.   I have been amazed at

find myself asking Dawnie about the ( Sloppy Joe Recipe ) from the Auction days.
We are still in the same house ya'll came to 8 years ago. I just wanted to tell
You and Shelly and all your support help, What a Fantastic Thing All of You are
doing in bring back the Memories.

Thanks so much

Hi Danny,
Sending my email address, enjoy your site very much.  My husband and I are planning
to attend the Reunion this summer. My family bought the old McCracken farm in 1953
or 1954. I am Mary Lou (BARBER) Dezelan.  All my brothers and sister still live in
the area. I have some pictures from the Richardsville School, I will see about getting
them scanned and sent to you. Thank you again for you great site .

Just off of Richardsville Road

(Mary, it is so cool to hear from friends I have not met yet, I am looking forward to the 5th, and if you can e-mail those pictures soon, I will get them on the site asap.  Looking forward to seeing you and your husband there.  Danny)

Hi, Dan, my sister Doris e-mailed this web-site to me as a place I might be interested
in. My name was Lillian Harriff, and I attended the Munderf school where Mr. David
Gayley taught.  I was in 5th grade under him, maybe 6th, too, and was most pleased
and astonished to find his comments here.  Also those of his daughter Alice Jane
... I remember her coming to school once with her father when I was there, and
thinking how special it must be to be the daughter of someone so awesome as a teacher!
Richardsville was our post office, and I well remember the house at the top of the
hill before the descent into the deep valley; and the school on the right when you
got up the other side.

We missed Mr. Gayley when he left our school, and always
thought of him on the drive into Brookville as we passed the school. I recognized
some other names... Fat Schaffer!

And Pat Davis is married to my 3rd cousin, Neal,
whose farm borders 2 sides of ours - south and west, and their Dixon Corners Store
is just across a pasture and a field from our house. I've been in the store
the few times I've gotten back to PA in recent years.

I have lived in much of the world, 4 continents, besides the US) as a missionary and currently reside
with my husband in Seattle, WA.

Pat, I wish I could be there for the Appalachian
Trail celebrations. Will be watching the site for other news of folks I have known.

(submitted latter)

Dan, I just came across the pictures of schools and want to make a correction on
the 1950 picture of the Munderf School. In the front middle, the slightly chubby
girl's name was not Rosalin, but Rosalie Ann. I remember very well my very
first day of school there, when my class were all called up to sit in the circle
of little green wooden chairs for my first reading class. We all had to tell our
names, and I thought "Rosalie Ann" was the prettiest name I had ever heard!
I went home and insisted to my family that it was all one word, "Rosalieann".
My best friends were Rosalie, and Phyllis Mortimer, and later Kay Webster. Does anyone
know anything about Rosalie Ann Webster? I saw Kay once about 10 years ago, very
briefly, and keep hoping I'll get back to visit her again. Phyllis died a couple
of years ago.

Thanks for doing a good job, Dan. I'm going to try to make it to next year's
reunion, as I expect to be back in PA and Michigan seeing family.

Lillian (Harriff) Oliveira  (known as Lily in my younger days, but not since collage 1957)

(This is a little tid-bit Lillian shared with me about her sister:) " By the way, wanted to tell you Danny, that being praised by my sister Doris for your web site is high praise, indeed. She was a computer programmer and then computer trouble shooter and fixer for a large company way back in '1975, when most of us didn't know really what computers were. I just got started about 6 yrs. ago.

(Lillian, It makes my day when I here from friends that I have not met yet, and Thank you for the kind words about our little site.  I hope to hear "and share" more about your recollections of early Richardsville.  Pat and Neal are such special residents, I always stop in at the store every time I get home too.  Danny )

Hi, Danny!
I got the link to your website from Pat Davis's column in the Brookville paper.
I grew up at Munderf - the old Harriff farm, if you know where that is. I'm
living in Cooksburg (Cook Forest) right now. Pat's husband is a grandson of
a cousin of mine (Edith Heitzenrater Dixon). My sister-in-law made up a CD some
time ago that has a lot of old pictures - most of them from my father's family,
others from my mother's family (not from around there), but there are also a
few of some of our neighbors, some school pictures - we have one of Alice Gayley's
Dad when he taught at Munderf.  We have several pictures taken at a lumber camp
my father once worked at. I'm not sure where it was, perhaps near Ridgway.
I'll try to burn a CD of most of the pictures, and if I go to the reunion, I'll
bring it, otherwise, I'll see to it that you get it. Unfortunately, only a
few of the pictures are identified. My sister Mildred Yost may be interested, too.
She currently lives in Roseville, but she doesn't have internet access. She
can probably identify some of the pictures that aren't!

P.S.

Doris Harriff

Cook Forest (have lived in Ohio & Illinois, also) - originally from Munderf, near Corner Store

( Doris, once more, I must say it is so great to here from new friends, I am looking forward to meeting you in July.  Also would love to here and recollections, funny stories you may like to share.  Also, I think you may find the Harriff name in Lewis Evan's school records from the late 1800's on the site, the family name sounds familiar.  Respectfully: Danny)

P.S. HTML is tricky, I cheat and use Front-page software.  ;-)

Dan,
Love Love Love and appreciate all the hard work you all put into this. It is awsome
and so thrilling to go from page to page. I love showing my daughter the pictures
of her grandparents and so many of whom I also had not seen. I also enjoy going
back further and further into our heritage. The work you have put into this project
is amazing.

Thank you so much,
Rana' Brosius Carpenter

Coshocton, Ohio

(Introduction: Rana' is my sister's Lucy (Long) (Bosius) Stotts's youngest daughter.  Fantastic to here from you Rana' , It is always good to visit with you and your family.  It makes it all worthwhile when someone gets a little smile from this little site, it does my heart good to think it makes a difference.  "Uncle Danny")  P.S. Thank you for sending me corrections, I will correct it.  (sorry for my goof)

Dan,

What you have done with the web site is amazing. Everyone involved with the reunion I
wish you all the best. I hope everyone is doing well and I wish you all the best.
I know it means a lot to all the people that grew up in the small little town of Richardsville.

My Thoughts are with you,

Hi Dan,  My father, George Harriff went to Smith school. He was 10 years old in 1887 and
his brother Bob was a year younger.

You have been in touch with my sister, Doris of Cooksburg. She sent me the Richardsville road page. I am number three in the
Sunday school picnic at Hazen. I was about ten then. I am 68 this year. I am related to Neal Davis and the Mortimer family of Munderf.  My father, George Harriff carried mail on the Richardsville route in the thirties. He used horses and buggy and later a Buick.  I don't remember this because it was before I was born. Gordon Cable might remember him as he was there then. The house on the web sight looks like it was taken from the intersection of the Jimtown and the Richardsville Roads.

I will try to make it down home this summer and look forward to meeting you in person.

( Thank you Tom for visiting, yes your sister Doris has been a BIG help!  You Munderf bunch sure are full of "Interesting Tid-Bits" I am glad you found father and Uncle listed under the old Lewis Evans records!  The records were very hard to read, or understand the differences from month to month, but I transcribed them as best I could.  I hope to get back to that page and add the ages for the family members you and your sister sent information on.  I look forward to meeting you too! Danny)

Hi Danny

I really enjoy reading your site. I especially liked Alice Galey's Civil War information. I knew her Dad, although I wasn't one of his students.

Hey Dan and Shelly,

Super great page, I was so excited when I found it that I immediately sent an email to Rob, Rana' and Dad.

I have a couple of pictures I might add from the 70's during our summers at grandma's I might add.

Take care!

Hi Danny and Shelly,

This is Barbie Owen McKinney and Shelly, believe it or not, I also
remembered you this year on the 29 of February! You are the only one I knew
with a leap year birthday!

My daughter just called me a few minutes ago and told me about your site.
She said that Geri Lindemuth Delp's daughter, Dayna told her. Geri and I
are good friends and our girls are best friends. Isn't it funny how we grow
older and the next generation just falls in behind us.

I really enjoyed the pictures from Warsaw elementary school. I named almost
all of them so my memory obviously isn't that bad. I'm looking forward
to spending more time on your site and checking out the blogs. Keep up the
good work.

Good to see you are both doing well.

( Great to hear from you Barbie! Please stay in touch, Shelly and I are so thankful for all of our blessings, and really enjoy hearing from school pals. Hope to see you in July!  Danny & Shelly)

Hi Danny

In the 1962-1963 class picture for Hazen, Warsaw Twp. School, the first person
in the first row is Jerome "Jerry" Park. I should know because I am his
mother!

I am going to send him this web site. It is wonderful and I have only just begun
to explore it.

I assume you are a descendant of Jim Long, who was about two grades behind me at Richardsville School. I graduated in 1951 from Brookville High School. I lived at the half-way turn on what is now Gravel Road. My father's farm was sold to Murrays in 1964 or 1965. It now is an overgrown weed patch but, hey, maybe some Amish family will buy it and make it look great!

I went to school for the first eight years of my life at Richardsville and have snapshots you might like.

Thanks so much for all the hard work on this web site. It is awesome and English
is overrated anyway!!!

(Actually, I an James Long Sr's (of Richardsville) brother.)

Thank for joining us here at RichardsvilleRoad, and thank you for helping with the correction of your son's name.

You are very kind to overlook my poor English.  Looking forward to hearing more from you, and class photos to share? Genealogy, or recollections of the area?)  Danny
